About us

Our nursery was started in 1991 to provide a small friendly reliable service on which the parents who entrusted us to care for their children could depend. We believe over the two decades plus that have elapsed since then we have more than lived up to this ambition. It is very gratifying for us that when on occasion we meet up with parents of those little children we have had the pleasure to have had in our care during their pre-school lives how many good things they credit to the positive start their children enjoyed at Summerside Kindergarten.

Much of our success is due to us being able to create an ethos and environment that is not only beneficial to our pupils but has contributed to us enjoying almost unequaled in the care sector staff retention. Many of our staff have joined us straight from school and have been trained by our own experienced senior staff ensuring that every member of staff meets Summerside Kindergarten’s exacting standards at every stage of their career. In addition our staff have gone on to achieve excellence in external professional examination and scrutiny. All our staff are required to undertake continuous career development and study to achieve appropriate qualifications not only in childcare but in many and various complimentary subjects that make our nursery the very best it can be.

Summerside Kindergarten staff work tirelessly to maintain and improve standards in the pre-school education we provide and wholly embrace the requirements of the Curriculum for Excellence and totally subscribe to GIRFEC (Getting it right for every child) and first time every time. Staff also have skills in Additional Support for Learning and the physical support and different communications’ needs some children may require.

We are a strong well-led team of professionals in pre-school care and education but most importantly we really care for our children and show this on a continuous basis throughout every minute of every day. Whether that minute be on a local outing to the shops or library or on a working party to our allotment where our resident horticulturalist spends a great deal of her time down on her knees eye to eye with her small charges showing and involving them in a little bit of the natural world that may well remain with them through into adulthood.

None of what we achieve for the children would be as successful as it is if it wasn't for the wonderful support and involvement we are delighted to have from the parents and a few grandparents. Parents suggest much of what we go on to adopt as policy or improvement to our service and they often do this through our annual Service User Satisfaction Questionnaire (SUSQ) in which they score many elements of our service. The analysis of the SUSQ returns indicates the high level of satisfaction we achieve and ensures we are never complacent and our need to keep on striving for continuing excellence in childcare.

Michelle Inch - Nursery Manager

I have worked at Summerside Kindergarten for nearly 10 years, joining after I left school and have thoroughly enjoyed my time here.

Over the years I have gained my SVQ Level 2 and Level 3 in Childcare and I am now completing my BA Childhood Practice through an open learning course.

I am the Nursery Manager, but I am still fully involved on a day-to-day basis with working with the children. I am based in the Pre-School room, which I really enjoy. The best thing about the nursery is the relationships the staff has with each other, and I believe this encourages the children to form great friendships amongst themselves as well.

I enjoy that I monitor all the rooms so I am able to experience working with all age groups. In my spare time I enjoy socialising with friends.

Nicky Wright - Head of Pre-School

I came to Summerside Kindergarten in 1992 as a student from Stevenson College. At that time I was studying to work with special needs and pre-birth to five-year-olds.

I became employed at the nursery in 1993 and have been here ever since.

I have gained my SVQ Level 3 in Childcare and Education qualifications and have attended many short courses in childcare and on the CfE (Curriculum for Excellence).

Over the years I have worked with all age groups and for the past five years I have been Head of Pre–School. I now work on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and in my free time I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.

I started working at Summerside Kindergarten in 1992, initially it was for four weeks holiday cover but I am still here 22 years later.

I have seen many children through the years and they are all different which makes the job very interesting. I have completed all my training while working at the nursery from NAMCW, NC in Childcare, HNC and PDA in Early Years in Childcare. I am now also looking into doing my BA in Childcare.

I like working at Summerside Kindergarten because it is small and friendly. We have a lovely group of staff and we all get on really well. I like seeing the children develop and grow from Babies through to Tweenies and then Pre-School. In my spare time I like going to the cinema and eating out while I also love spending time with family.

I have been working at Summerside Kindergarten for three years. I came to the nursery after working with children and young people with additional/special needs.

You will now find me working in the Tweenies room beside Nicola. During my time the nursery I have gained my SVQ Level 3 in Childcare and Development by attending evening classes while I attend courses throughout the year to keep my working practice up to date and give me fresh activity and teaching techniques.

I like working at Summerside as there is a good friendly atmosphere for all, low staff turnover and we all get along and work as a team to provide the best care for the children in our care.

In my spare time I like to cook for friends and family and like to eat out. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends and love walking my dog Rubi.

Stephanie Wight - Childcare Practitioner

I have been working at Summerside Kindergarten for almost four years.

In that time I have achieved my SVQ Level 2 and 3 in Childcare. Whilst I was doing my training I had great support from other members of staff at Summerside.

I work alongside Tessa, Janette and Demi in the Baby rooms, but also help out in the other rooms when required. I enjoy working at Summerside because I get to work with children of all ages and I get to see different stages of their development. I also like that we have the opportunity to communicate with the parents on a day-to-day basis and the fact that we all work together as a team.

All staff are open to new ideas and share experiences throughout the nursery.

In my spare time I like to spend time with my family and friends. I like spending time with my colleagues when we do our team building events too.

I first came to Summerside Kindergarten as a pupil and a number of years later I came back to work here. I completed my work experience, helped out with some other work and became a full-time member of staff just over two years ago.

I am currently based in the Older Babies room and enjoy being able to spend time in all the other rooms too, seeing the children grow and develop. I have gained my SVQ Level 3 in Childcare and go on all the relevant courses to keep up to date.

I enjoy working at Summerside alongside my colleagues who are very supportive, we work closely as a team and all socialise outside of work. I like how we know all of the children and families well and that we have the opportunity to care for and support all the children.

In my spare time I enjoy spending time with family and friends and I also like going out for food and taking weekend trips away.

My name is jade I am 16 years old and have just started working at Summerside Kindergarten. I have just left Trinity Academy and I will be starting my Level 3 in Childcare.

Katherine Cassidy - Relief Work

Hi I am Katherine and I've been working as a relief member of staff at Summerside Kindergarten since March 2014. I have always loved working with children and was delighted to have the opportunity to be part of such a great team.

I have loved working as part of the Summerside team and have gained a lot of knowledge from the experienced staff. What makes Summerside special for me is that I have the opportunity to look after all the different age groups, and watching there different development stages.

This has been an amazing experience and in September I will be leaving Summerside to start my degree to become a primary school teacher at the University of Edinburgh. Hopefully I will continue to come back to Summerside to do relief work.
